Shared on Facebook by Farnoosh Moshiri: “Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was locked up in 2010 in connection with her human rights work. Demand freedom for Nasrin! Share on Facebook.” (w/links to Amnesty)

Amnesty International’s Letter: “I am writing to urge you to immediately release lawyer and mother of two Nasrin Sotoudeh. She is serving a six-year prison sentence in Evin Prison, Tehran. Her imprisonment is based solely on her peacefully exercising her rights to freedom of expression and association, including her work as a defence lawyer and her human rights advocacy…

…Until she is released, please ensure that Nasrin Sotoudeh has regular access to her family and lawyers of her choosing. You should also lift the foreign travel bans placed on her husband and daughter…full letter Moshiri’s The Bathouse:  Farnoosh Moshiri’s The Bathhouse, set in post-Revolution Iran, captures the political and social upheavals of post-Revolution Iran. An innocent girl is sent to prison for the suspected political views of her siblings. The succinct tale examines prison life, the sadistic nature that consumes those in power, the blind evil of religious fanaticism, and universal tragedies that derive from society that suffers brain death. A powerful and deserving novel that should be read both as a prophecy of Orwellian Religion and as a historical reference to a dark time in Iranian history.

Summary: “During the fundamentalist revolution in Iran, a 17-year-old girl is arrested. She is not a politico, but her brother and sister-in-law are, so she is suspect too. She is confined in a former bathhouse with several other women, ranging in age from adolescence to elderly, whose mental states vary from the stoic and care-giving to the insane. Winner of the 2001 Black Heron Press Award for Social Fiction.” Swine:  See How a Nation Committed Suicide.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – Wants to bomb Israel back to the Goat Age, thinks there are no homosexuals in Iran, preparing for the return of Imam Mahdi, suspect Jews send spies disguised as rats into his country, and throws dissidents into Evin Prison.

Nasrin Sotoudeh (From Wiki) – “Represents activists and journalists such as Isa Saharkhiz, Heshmat Tabarzadi, Nahid Keshavarz, Parvin Ardalan, Omid Memarian, and Roya Tolouie, as well as child abuse and criminal cases…Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi called for her release and expressed concern regarding her health. In the statement, Ebadi said, “Ms. Sotoudeh is one of the last remaining courageous human rights lawyers who has accepted all risks for defending the victims of human rights violations in Iran”. Former Czech President Vaclav Havel and Zahra Rahnavard, the wife of opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi, also called for Sotoudeh’s release.”

Persian Connection: My paternal grandfather, born in Iran, died when my father was a child, thus I am one-fourth Persian. Culturally I felt little connection to this side of my family in my youth. Now I find most things political captivating, concurrent with my growing curiosity and interest in Iranian politics.
